The date is not necessarily a indication of age as moulds were known to be reused.

When purchasing an antique fireback, it is helpful to understand that the date cast into the face represents the year the master wooden mold was carved, not necessarily the exact year the iron was poured, as these valuable molds were routinely reused by for decades or even generations. Furthermore during the 19th century, there was a massive wave of nostalgia for historic decor. People loved the look of Tudor, Stuart, and Georgian styles, which sparked a huge commercial market for reissuing early designs. Foundries would take a genuine 1600s or 1700s fireback, press it directly into a sand bed to copy it, and cast a brand-new one. Earlier 16th and 17th-century firebacks are typically much thinner and lighter because iron was a scarce, expensive commodity at the time, whereas later 18th and 19th-century pieces became significantly thicker and heavier once the Industrial Revolution made iron widely available. Delivery Information
