CIRCA 16TH CENTURY ‘CATHERINE OF ARAGON’ STONE FIRE SURROUND

STOCK REF: 146247600

Circa 16th Century ‘Catherine Of Aragon’ Stone Fire Surround

Here we have a Circa 16th Century ‘Catherine Of Aragon’ Stone Fire Surround, available on display in our showroom at Authentic Reclamation. This beautiful Fire Surround is in good condition considering its age. It features three large pieces of stone work, sides and lintel. The Lintel is carved with leaf motifs and the established Pomegranate emblem of Catherine of Aragon.

As Queen of England, Catherine used the pomegranate as her badge. This choice can be traced back specifically to her upbringing in Al Andalus. The pomegranate presented a symbolic meaning to the reigning queen. The pomegranate was also used by Catherine’s parents as it became part of their royal arms; a heraldic device to Granada.

The carvings of the Catherine’s Andalusian badge continued to be in use even after her fall from favour. Rolls, panels and blocks were not fully discarded when Anne came to power, although some designs were altered.

The pomegranate was also used as a heraldic symbol by Catherine’s daughter Queen Mary to reflect her Spanish lineage and marriage to Philip of Spain.

We have an extensive range of surrounds in stock so have a browse on our website or come in today to see our extensive showroom.
